anissa boukili

Anissa Boukili El Hassani is a multidisciplinary artist based in Montreal. She was born in Marrakech, Morocco, in 1997. She immigrated to Montreal with her family in 2002. During her youth, she spent several summers in Morocco with her family, who still live mostly in Morocco. She developed an interest in the arts towards the end of her high school years. She began her studies in the social sciences and humanities, and then she switched to the visual arts at the Cégep du Vieux Montréal in 2016. In 2018, she made her first solo exhibition Dichotomies at Cégep du Vieux Montréal. In 2018, she began her studies in Studio Arts at Concordia University.

I find my first inspiration in Moroccan crafts, especially the work of wood and ceramics. As an artist, I seek to bring crafts to the level of visual art. Through my works, I appropriate my own culture and add my personal touch to an existing art. Through this appropriation of my own culture, I seek to create a dialogue between racialized people and white people by making them aware of the problems experienced by immigrant populations and the problems related to double ethnicity. Through my works, I recount my experience as an Arab woman in a contemporary society. In addition, I seek to represent gender issues, the fragility of the human body and to give power.

Part of a series, Anissa Boukhili who’s close to her Moroccan roots, painted the portrait of her grandparents with family pictures printed in the background. The purple of the portraits has a yellow shadow, similar to the yellow background, to symbolize the formative experiences that shaped her grandparents. This work evokes their nostalgia of their childhood and her former life in Morocco.
